Jury’s assessment

Responding wittily to the competition brief, the proposal with the code bVuCtq was unanimously proclaimed the winner by the jury.

The pavilion consists of two parts: a floating wooden platform and a floating canvas stretched by a helium balloon. Smaller platforms of different heights are loaded on the supporting wooden platform, which responds to the program and the context, thus forming a varied topography. A poetic tension between the two materials—the helium balloon and the canvas—can be felt in the structural design of the roof. Both materials only make sense when acting together and are therefore interdependent. This simple but extremely well-thought-out construction design of the roof is thus the central conceptual narrative, giving the pavilion an extra dimension and thus granting it the status of a central marker in space.

The roof solution is at once intelligent and humorous, as the inflatable helium balloon with canvas allows it to exceed the height limit of 4 m. The proposal thus circumvents the rules without actually violating them. The project is comprehensive and well thought out in other respects as well: the positions and heights of the platforms allow performances towards the embankment on the north side, while on the south side of the pavilion a platform lowered by one height forms a bench, from which the river can be observed.

The design of the pavilion also very subtly addresses the motif of the fence, not introducing additional architectural elements, but achieving safety through the architectural articulation of the perimeter itself. Once more the consistency and integrity of the architectural design can be perceived in the specific triangular shapes of the perimeter, as the trimmed edges open views towards the river at key points.
