Kdo smo
About Outsider
Outsider sta leta 2015 ustanovila arhitekta Nina in Matevž Granda.
Arhitekturo povezujemo s kulturo, umetnostjo, ekologijo, gospodarstvom in vsakdanjim življenjem.
Z neodvisnim uredniškim delom širimo zavedanje o pomenu arhitekture in spodbujamo premišljen odnos do okolja, ki ga soustvarjamo vsi.
Revija in spletni portal
Vsake tri mesece izide tiskana revija Outsider s priližno 200 stranmi izvirnih vsebin. Posamezne številke so zasnovane okoli izbranih tem, ki povezujejo arhitekturo, kulturo, umetnost in družbena vprašanja.
Spletni portal posodabljamo vsak dan. Objavljamo predstavitve arhitekturnih projektov, kritike, intervjuje, eseje, kolumne in razmisleke o aktualnih vprašanjih prostora.
Izdajamo izvirna dela in prevode s področij arhitekture, oblikovanja, kulture, medijev in družbe.
Delo finskega arhitekta in misleca obravnava pomen tradicije, ustvarjalnosti, učenja in utelešenega mišljenja.
Sogovorniki razmišljajo o zgodovini, sedanjosti in prihodnosti časopisov, novinarstva in medijev.

Z interdisciplinarno skupino strokovnjakov razvijamo sodobne načine uporabe zemlje v arhitekturi ter pridobljeno znanje posredujemo z delavnicami, publikacijami in izvedenimi projekti.
V sklopu večletnega raziskovanja so nastali zemeljski paviljoni Parka preročišč.
Z delavnicami, prototipi in manjšimi prostorskimi posegi preizkušamo mešanice, tehnike, konstrukcijske rešitve in obstojnost zemlje v dejanskih razmerah.
Udeleženci delajo z zemljo, lesom, kamnom in drugimi lokalnimi materiali. Ob načrtovanju in gradnji v merilu 1 : 1 spoznavajo lastnosti materialov, preizkušajo različne načine gradnje ter razmišljajo o odgovornem odnosu do prostora, dediščine in naravnih virov.

Raziskovanje gradnje z zemljo, praktično delo in arhitekturno načrtovanje so dobili nadaljevanje v biroju Materra, specializiranem za gradnjo z zemljo in arhitekturne prenove.
Natečajna rešitev povezuje prometno infrastrukturo, krajinsko ureditev in javni program.
Pobude in akcije

Ob njej potekajo predstavitve novih številk, pogovori, razstave, bralni krožki, umetniške intervencije in drugi javni dogodki.

About us
Outsider – a magazine that goes beyond boundaries
Outsider is an independent Slovenian media platform dedicated to architecture, culture and society. We publish a print magazine and books, update our online platform daily, and organise events, exhibitions, summer schools, workshops, competitions and public initiatives.
We understand space as a shared resource: as the physical environment we build and inhabit, but also as a space for thought, relationships and public debate.
Outsider was founded in 2015 by architects Nina and Matevž Granda. Together with the editorial team and contributors from a wide range of fields, they have created a platform that connects professional knowledge with open and accessible public discussion.
Architecture concerns everyone
Outsider is not intended only for architects. We explore how space shapes society and how individuals and communities can shape their environment.
Our work connects architecture with culture, art, ecology, economics and everyday life. We write about professional subjects clearly without overlooking their complexity. We believe that the quality of our surroundings is not solely a professional concern, but a shared responsibility.
Through independent editorial work, we raise awareness of the importance of architecture and encourage a more thoughtful relationship with the environment we all help create.
The magazine and online platform
Every three months, Outsider publishes a 200-page print magazine featuring original content. Individual issues are organised around selected themes that connect architecture, culture, art and social questions.
Our online platform is updated daily with architectural projects, criticism, interviews, essays, columns and reflections on current spatial issues.
The print and online editions complement each other, but their content is not the same. The magazine offers a slower and more in-depth reading experience, while the online platform responds directly to current events, projects and debates.
Book publishing
Outsider also publishes books. Our publications include original works and translations addressing architecture, design, culture, media and society. They allow us to examine subjects introduced in the magazine in greater depth and to bring important works by Slovenian and international authors to Slovenian readers.
Our publications include:
Juhani Pallasmaa: Ukoreninjenost – refleksije za mlade arhitekte
This work by the Finnish architect and thinker explores tradition, creativity, learning and embodied thought. It is intended for young architects and anyone interested in architecture, art and creative work.
LES
The book presents 27 private and public timber buildings constructed between 2015 and 2025. The selection demonstrates the possibilities of contemporary timber architecture and considers the responsible use of local natural resources.
Kosta Strajnić: Jože Plečnik
The book is the first Slovenian translation of the first monograph devoted to the architect Jože Plečnik. Originally published in Zagreb in 1920, Strajnić’s text marks the beginning of the extensive body of literature on Plečnik’s work.
Med vrsticami: Pogovori o časopisih
The book brings together twelve interviews conducted by Nina Granda with journalists and editors from different generations, accompanied by portraits by Carlos David. The contributors discuss the history, present condition and future of newspapers, journalism and the media.
Through book publishing, we create a lasting space for ideas that require more time, a broader context and attentive reading.

More than a media platform
Outsider extends beyond the boundaries of conventional media. We organise festivals, public discussions, exhibitions, architectural competitions, lectures and practical workshops. We bring together experts from different fields and explore approaches to architecture that respond to the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century.
We pay particular attention to renovation, the reuse of existing buildings and construction with local natural materials such as wood, stone and earth.
Centre for Building with Earth
At the Centre for Building with Earth in Dobrava pri Škocjanu, we combine research, design and practical work. Together with an interdisciplinary group of experts, we develop contemporary ways of using earth in architecture and share the knowledge gained through workshops, publications and completed projects.
The Centre is a place for experimentation and learning. Our work is based on direct contact with materials, local knowledge and collaboration among architects, artists, researchers, students and the local community.
The Park of Oracles earth pavilions have emerged from this continuing research. The project explores the structural and spatial possibilities of building with earth, as well as the role of collective work in creating architecture.
The Park of Oracles is a living laboratory. Through workshops, prototypes and small-scale spatial interventions, we test earth mixtures, building techniques, structural solutions and the material’s durability under real conditions.
Summer schools
At the Centre for Building with Earth, we organise summer schools that combine architectural thought, practical work and learning within a community.
Participants work with earth, wood, stone and other local materials. By designing and building at full scale, they learn about the properties of these materials, test different construction methods and consider responsible approaches to space, heritage and natural resources.
The 2026 Thinking Hands International Summer School of Architecture consists of four connected parts: building a pavilion with earth, constructing a chicken coop, working on the renovation of heritage buildings, and taking part in critical discussions about the future of architecture.
The name Thinking Hands reflects the belief that the hand does not merely carry out an idea, but also plays an active part in thought. The summer school is therefore based on direct contact with materials, learning through making, and connecting the mind, body and built environment.

Materra – architecture grounded in knowledge and experience
Research into building with earth, practical construction and architectural design have been continued through Materra, an architectural practice specialising in earth construction and the renovation of existing buildings.
The practice was established following the winning entry in the 2025 architectural competition for the Charging Park in Novo Mesto. The authors of the awarded proposal were Matevž Granda and Matevž Rožman, with Fia Lemajič and Dejan Zupanc contributing to the project.
The competition proposal combines transport infrastructure, landscape design and public space. Structures made of natural timber are complemented by rammed-earth supports that define and protect a central green area. The jury awarded the proposal an enhanced first prize, highlighting its clear and distinctive spatial concept, its use of natural materials and the potential to apply its elements at other locations.
Materra brings the knowledge developed through research and construction at the Centre for Building with Earth into architectural projects. The practice focuses on contemporary earth construction, the responsible treatment of existing buildings and carefully considered architectural renovation.
Initiatives and action
Outsider does more than observe and comment on the built environment. Through editorial initiatives, public calls, competitions and direct action, we draw attention to spatial problems, connect professional knowledge with public debate and propose solutions.
Our initiatives arise when we identify a gap between the public interest and existing practices. They open public discussion, formulate concrete proposals and encourage systemic change.
Our current Heritage Initiative addresses the position of owners of immovable cultural heritage. Because heritage is protected in the public interest, its owners should not be expected to bear all the additional costs and responsibilities associated with demanding renovation work.
The initiative proposes tax relief for renovation carried out in accordance with heritage protection requirements, exemptions from certain charges, and access to favourable loans and public guarantee schemes. Its aim is to improve the position of owners as custodians of shared heritage.

Trafika – the magazine’s physical space
Plečnik’s newsstand on Vegova Street in Ljubljana is Outsider’s physical space. We revived the abandoned kiosk designed by Jože Plečnik as a small cultural centre and a meeting place for readers, authors, creatives and passers-by.
Trafika offers magazines, books and a selection of other publications. It also hosts magazine launches, conversations, exhibitions, reading groups, artistic interventions and other public events.
Trafika expresses Outsider’s understanding of architecture: with the right programme, even a very small space can become an important part of public life. Here, the magazine moves beyond its printed and digital pages and enters the city as a place for encounters, the exchange of knowledge and collective reflection.
