Stables are among the most mundane of all construction projects. This rationalised building type is primarily designed for functionality in terms of form and materials, based on agricultural considerations. The welfare of the animals often takes a back seat, as do design elements. Three years ago, I already took on this little architectural challenge and designed and built a small chicken coop for the four hens of my grandmother. For this competition, I kept the good parts and improved on the areas that needed work. In reference to the bathing carts of the 19th century at the North Sea resorts, the henhouse can be moved manually as a mobile vehicle and thus does not seal a single square metre of ground. The chicken coop rests on a steel profile base, keeping it at a safe height from predators. A simple wooden frame construction is planked on both sides and could be insulated with wood fibre insulation or similar. The hens reach the coop via a ladder, which can be closed at night with an (automated) flap. The coop can be cleaned via a double door on the opposite side and two side flaps. Side windows, which can also be opened for good air circulation, ensure good lighting. The interior is simply furnished and offers the chickens the retreat they need. I have observed that chickens also like to brood together. I therefore recommend three larger nesting boxes, which can accommodate two or three hens at the same time. Above them is a droppings tray and a long perch. A scraper makes it really easy to remove the chickens’ night-time droppings by hand. The coop oscillates between historical reminiscences of rural design and carefully crafted contemporary character. It aims to be neither historically ingratiating nor succumb to today’s rationalising building culture.
